This experiential and experimental collaborative activity took place during the week of 8 to 12 April

Students from the Master's Degree in Interior Design for Hotels, Bars, Restaurants and Commercial Property participated in the workshop ‘La Ria: an exhibition a drift’ alongside  MA Interior and Spatial Design students from the UAL's Camberwell College of Arts. An activity that once again highlights the close ties between the two academic institutions, which promote mutual growth and development.

The city of Bilbao’s urban environment and scenic surroundings were the starting point for a brief that invited the group of students to create an exhibition space in a public urban setting. With an open theme, the proposal required the inclusion of La Ría — or Estuary of Bilbao — as well as the city, as part of the exhibition content.

The first days of the workshop were dedicated to research and field work, including a tour of the estuary by boat and a guided visit to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, led by Borja Vildósola, Teacher at IED Kunsthal, and José Manuel Fernández, Programme Leader of the master’s degree and Activity Coordinator.

In the second part of the activity, the 18 students were divided into four groups to develop different creative proposals around various themes connected to the estuary, employing experimental and improvised strategies related to presentation and interpretation, in order to frame narratives around the material, the space, and a sense of place.

A highly enriching experience on academic, experiential and relational levels for the students who participated in this workshop.
