This activity of an experiential academic nature is part of the final degree project of the Interior Design course
On 15, 16 and 17 of April, fourth-year students from the Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design paid a visit to the city of Porto, Portugal. This field trip, facilitated by Jesús Arrecubieta, Coordinador of the Design school at IED Kunsthal Bilbao, sought to equip students with practical and experiential knowledge of special interest to the discipline, with the support and participation of specialist teachers and professionals.
Portugal, and in particular Porto, has been a key reference in the world of design for some years now. From the modesty of its way of doing things and its southern European location, to the global influence of its work, its designers, and its trades, architects and artists; all have been decisive elements in the last few decades.
The group of students visited the Sargadelos ceramics factory in Lugo, which stands out for its quality craftsmanship and promotion of Galician culture. Then, in the town of Matosinhos, they had the opportunity to visit the Boa Nova Tea House and the saltwater swimming pool Piscina das Marés, both designed by Alvaro Siza — one of the most prominent names in contemporary architecture at a global level — as well as the Quinta da Conceiçao Tennis Pavilion by Fernando Távora. The day ended with a visit to the studio of Eduardo Aires, responsible for developing the visual identity of the city of Porto, who shared his projects and his approach to design work with the students.
The tour concluded with a visit to Casa da Musica — the new home of the National Orchestra of Porto — designed by Rem Koolhaas, and to the Serralves Foundation, where they had the opportunity to explore the extension project and the exhibition dedicated to Álvaro Siza. This last stop on the itinerary was guided by António Choupina — Architect, close collaborator of Álvaro Siza, and Curator of the exhibition — who joined the group of students and teachers at the dinner that brought the day to a close.
An intensive immersion into the world of craftsmanship, architecture, design, landscaping and art, aiming to broaden the horizons and strengthen the practical skills of the students, who will present their final degree projects at the end of this academic year.
