Between music and cinema: the power of soundtracks to influence narratives and create emotional connections
Music has the power to penetrate our memory, sometimes even more than images. Just think of all the soundtracks that have imprinted themselves in the collective memory and are instantly recognizable. This is the concept that Federico De Feo will explore.
From its beginnings to the present day, music has always been an integral part of the cinematic experience, capable of emotionally guiding the audience to a deeper understanding of the visuals.
Soundtracks are a blend of pre-existing compositions and pieces created specifically for films, offering opportunities for experimentation to artists who may not have initially come from the cinematic world. Many have found a new avenue of expression in visual storytelling. This is the case for Ludwig Göransson, who began as a producer for Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) and has since revolutionized contemporary compositional language with soundtracks already considered classics, such as Black Panther, The Mandalorian, and Oppenheimer. Other iconic examples include Wendy Carlos’s visionary electronic work for Kubrick, Ennio Morricone’s unforgettable scores for Sergio Leone’s westerns, and John Williams’s orchestral brilliance for Spielberg.
Federico De Feo holds a degree in Sound Design from IED Rome. He works as a freelance editor for publications such as Rolling Stone, Wired, Cosmopolitan, and Outpump, where he explores new forms and techniques of music applied to cinema and TV series. He has contributed to several educational projects with the European Institute of Design in Rome, both as a lecturer and guest speaker, and with Roma Tre University. Additionally, he hosted a radio program centered on soundtracks for Radio Raheem Milano, titled Leitmotiv.
The event will take place in room S10 at 6:30 PM on December 11.
