Three projects by IED Barcelona Interior Design students are among the 10 shortlisted projects of the 35th Habitácola Awards organized by ARQUIN-FAD. They are “Cañizo 23” by Monique Almeida de Oliveira and Hana Tamer Abdelaziz; “Balcome” by Arola Velasco Moreno and Júlia Barrera Garcés; and “Sharing Green” by Mia Murrieta Vatterodt, Yuval Salman and Kira Roeblitz.
With the title “In between, the interior-exterior transition spaces of homes”, this year the awards, aimed at architecture and interior design students, focused on the facade enclosures of multi-family homes. In particular, attention was to be paid to the so-called balconies or galleries, launching young designers a proposal to rethink or redesign these types of elements so that they can be applied to facades facing south, southeast or southwest, in order to address the energy challenges of the home and, at the same time, review its formal properties, making them more in line with the aesthetics of, and ways of living and projecting in, the 21st century.
Faced with this challenge, “Cañizo 23” has devised the creation of balconies using Mediterranean cane as the backbone of the infrastructure. This element facilitates the thermal and acoustic comfort of the home, passive ventilation and air purification, which translates into a reduction in energy consumption not only in terms of production but also in its use.
“Balcome” seeks to welcome residents back to their balconies (which have been in disuse due to heat and wind conditions) thanks to proposing a customisable, modular sun protection system with retractable and adjustable blinds. Made from economical and sustainable heat-treated wood, the panels thus improve the energy efficiency of buildings, while also providing noise protection and privacy.
Finally, “Sharing Green” proposes an intervention to populate all the buildings with urban orchards and vertical gardens, building new balconies with steel that include pots and irrigation systems, protected by a mesh of steel cables.
The final verdict, in October
The winning project will be announced in October, coinciding with the awarding of the 2023 FAD Awards. Both the winning project and the rest of the shortlisted works will constitute the HABITÁCOLA AWARDS exhibition that will be on show at Disseny Hub Barcelona from October 2023 to January 2024.
