Third-year Interior Design and Product Design students have designed two lighting design window displays for two establishments in the city

IED Barcelona third-year Interior Design and Product Design students Carina Kalweit, Caterina Sofía de Simone, Giulia Martinelli and Nina Dupont have participated in the innovation for commerce campaign “Christmas lights illuminate commerce”, designing two lighting design shop window displays for two establishments in the city.

These are ‘Elf’s Factory’ (for the Naturdescans La Garrotxa store. Pg. Maragall, 78) and ‘Starry Night. Gravity Christmas’ (for Market Casa Italia. Pg. Maragall, 159). Both window dressing proposals were mentored by teacher Claudia Schneider and were created taking into account the use of recyclable and sustainable materials. They will be on display until 7 January.

‘Elf’s Factory’ reproduces a Christmas factory in which elves work at night to deliver gifts to all families. In one of the shop windows, a structure with conveyor belts carries the packages along the entire assembly line, while the other represents a scene in which one of the elves tries to organise all the gifts to put in Santa’s bag.

‘Starry Night. Gravity Christmas’ captures the enchantment and wonder of the holiday season, evoking a sense of warmth and magic, with an abundance of little lights that resemble a starry night sky, mirroring the festive glow of Christmas lights. The true magic lies in the products, which appear to float effortlessly in midair.

“Christmas lights illuminate commerce” is an initiative promoted by Barcelona centre de Disseny, together with Barcelona City Council’s Directorate of Commerce, Catering and Consumer Affairs to bring the Christmas lighting that fills the city’s streets to shop windows through lighting design. It includes innovative projects in line with the values that the 2024 Christmas campaign wants to convey: tenderness, hospitality, respect, sustainability, responsible consumption, equality and diversity.

IED Barcelona’s proposals were evaluated by a professional jury that highlighted their high level of execution in such a limited space and celebrated the (not so obvious) choice of their Christmas colours.

We encourage you to visit ‘Elf’s Factory’ and ‘Starry Night’, and to participate in the popular vote to choose your favourite window display in the corresponding stores. The final result will be announced on 10 January.
