A social message on educational poverty and the hardship faced on a daily basis by many adolescents and their families. This is the content of the video project La ruota della Fortuna (The Wheel of Fortune) by Sara Santangelo, Claudio Di Trapani, John Brian Trugli and Giulia Staudacher (Master Course in Creative Direction IED Milano), realised following a brief by Caritas Italiana, which convinced the jury of the Spot School Awards in Salerno, the Mediterranean creativity festival now in its 23rd edition. The commercial, which metaphorically depicts how the fate of children is often already decided at birth by luck alone, unfairly and independent of merit, was awarded the Grand Prix Città di Salerno. Two other prizes were also awarded for the IED Milano Master Course.
There was also victory for IED Roma, which won the Golden School Trophy for the second year in a row, as well as five prizes for projects developed by students of the Three-year degree in Communication Design, in collaboration with Caritas Italiana and FERPI - Federazione Relazioni Pubbliche Italiana. For Caritas, they developed three communication campaigns also on the topic of educational poverty, a problem that is widespread in Italy although little known. On the other hand, two awareness-raising campaigns were designed and awarded for FERPI on the topic of verbal harassment in work contexts, an issue that directly affects 7 out of 10 women.
THE WINNING IED PROJECTS AT THE SPOT SCHOOL AWARDS
IED Milano's Wheel of Fortune, winner of the Grand Prix and a gold medal, impressed the jury chaired by Valentina Amenta, creative director at Publicis London, with this reasoning: “For bringing to light an important human truth: a child's future should not be determined by the luck of being born into a rich or poor family. This issue, sadly still relevant today, was treated with great sensitivity and impact: an effective story from a different perspective that fully deserved the Grand Prix 2024”.
Virginia Barone and Ashley Gerdo, also from the Master Course in Creative Direction IED Milano, were awarded a bronze (third place) for the project Laboratorio Adolescenza (Teenage Workshop), a press campaign that raises awareness about the excessive use of social media. By means of a well-known tool for frequent smartphone users, the photo cropping tool, a teenage girl is shown literally “cutting herself off” from potentially wonderful and fun moments in her daily life, such as authentic encounters with friends, to be on social media. An invitation to switch these things off to discover the beauty of life.
In addition to the Golden School Trophy, IED Roma was also awarded two bronzes, one in the Press section for the project Complimenti non richiesti sulle molestie verbali (Unrequested compliments on verbal harassment, by Edoardo Botta, Riccardo Frusteri) and one in the Press Announcement Poster section for the project Mai più fogli bianchi (No more white sheets, by Serena Bruziches, Sofia Coradini) one silver, in the Press Announcement Poster section, for the project Non è un complimento (This is not a compliment, by Giorgia Curatolo, Chiara Conti, Giana Osman); two golds, one in the Poster section for the project Costretti a crescere (“Forced to grow”, by Flavia Chiominto, Elena Giovannoni, Benedetta Scoppola) and one in the Activation category for the project Questo è il banco di (This is the desk of, by Chiara La Torre, Pamela Marcelli, Gaia Parmigiani).
