Selected from 220 applications, Slow Light was the only proposal among the 30 included in the festival’s programme to come from a Spanish design school
Every year at the beginning of December since 1989, the French city of Lyon has celebrated its traditional Fête des Lumières, a popular festival dedicated to light whose origins date back to the 19th century and that this year included the participation of IED Barcelona.
Slow Light, the installation created by students of Interior Design, Graphic Design, Product Design and Motion Graphics and Video for the most recent edition of Llum BCN and exhibited in June at Sónar+D, travelled there not only to continue raising awareness about our energy consumption, but also to demonstrate its versatility and ability to adapt to different spaces and interactions. Nearly three million visitors visited the Fête des Lumières festival from 7 to 10 December.
Raffaella Perrone, Head of IED Barcelona’s Design School, confirms this: “The turnout was very high and the reception from the general public was incredible. The experience also provided our students with a great opportunity to consolidate their learning. They gained a new perspective on what it means to be involved in a festival of this calibre, including managing and resolving unexpected changes. Their gaze now is set not only on technique, but also on the poetics of pieces.”
For her part, Mery Glez, Head of IED Barcelona’s Visual Arts School, stressed that the students were “enthusiastic and grateful for the opportunity to have a very enriching transversal experience in a professional environment outside the Barcelona school”. The mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, visited the installation on the final day and congratulated the students for their “interesting work”.
Selected from 220 applications, Slow Light was the only proposal among the 30 included in the festival’s programme to come from a Spanish design school. The project also enjoyed the collaboration of the Cervantes Institute in Lyon for its trip to Fête des Lumières.
