On July 11th, the best of Visual Arts thesis projects will be featured in a carousel of fiction and documentary shorts, video games, traditional and CG animated films, soundtracks and installations.
For the second year in a row, IED Milan opens to the public the best of the production of the School of Visual Arts' graduates and recent graduates, in a marathon of projections and suggestions-scheduled for July 11 from 2:30 p.m. involving most of the School's three-year courses as well as the Master's in Animation Design. The event is held during the week that IED is dedicating to orientation on its educational offerings, with online and in-person Open Days.
21 works for 8 hours of entertainment on the screen and in the foyer of Cinema Anteo (Piazza XXV Aprile 8). First of all, to welcome the visitor, before the actual screenings, is the interactive and multimedia installation Eterea (Media Design course), which aims to raise awareness of the theme of air perception.
From here then, we plunge into the darkness of the room: the world of video games (from CG Animation's course) takes shape on the screen with Etheria - a project about a time when advanced technology merged with ancient magic, giving rise to an incredibly diverse and complex reality - and Broken Chords, which tells the story of a little girl transformed into a puppet capable of shaping her future through her choices, sometimes good, sometimes selfish or wrong.
This is followed by 3D animated shorts, the work of CG Animator and Sound Designer: Fragile Melody, completely in Cartoon style, tells the story of Melody and the Ballerina inside her Carillon whose daily routine is interrupted by an image of war; Echo, a 3D short film born out of the imagination of a world less distant than we would like from our own, in which technology is able to simulate any person virtually; and also Strawberry Cake, which tells the story of Akemi, a Japanese girl secretly in love with her best friend, whose insecurities take shape in a monster with whom she will have to deal as the story evolves.
It then continues with traditional animation shorts, from the three-year course in Illustration and Animation: Un Battesimo (A Baptism), a tale of Icarus and Isaac's arduous pilgrimage through the desolate post-Atomic landscape of a distant future; Gorilla's paradise, in which a gorilla and a monkey find themselves on a deserted island due to a plane crash, thanks to which they realize that the only way to escape is to cooperate; A perfect storm, which tells of the change in perspective of a cashier, whose dull, dreary day is turned upside down by the sparkling imagination of her daughter; as well as Deliverage, which tells of the anger and frustration of G, a young cyclo-worker; Quel che rimane (What remains), the story of an innkeeper left alone in his hometown where, despite the fact that his wife has passed away and his daughter has left, he remains anchored to his usual habits; and Blobo (from the Master's in Animation Design), centered on a gelatinous creature with no defined form who must overcome a series of obstacles to reach his ultimate goal: to arrive on its star and assume a new form, to begin its new existence.
Animation then leaves room for fiction shorts, from the Video Design course in collaboration with Sound Design: Solo ragazzi (Just boys) deals with the consequences that the virality of videos put online can have especially on the youngest; Vortici (Swirls) tells the story of two boys searching for their place in the world; Correnti narrates the evolution of Sofia, a young woman dealing with the pain of losing her father; La felicità non fa racconto describes the reunion of a daughter with her mother, still shaken by the loss of her husband.
We then move on to docu-fiction with Io sono nessuno, a portrait of Calabrian goldsmith Gerardo Sacco, and documentaries Di Quiete e di Luce, which recounts life inside an abbey, in which everyone is busy carrying out their daily tasks in an accurate and serene manner; Paniko, which recounts the life of the animal-free circus of the same name, in which the performers propose a lifestyle free of patterns; and finally Ras El Bar, which through the story of the life of the Syam family reflects the hope and perseverance shared by more than 28.000 Palestinians.
Space is also given to the trailer of another installation with a high evocative value: Muscantara (Video Design), which attempts to bring back to the collective memory the phenomenon of Tarantismo, making the viewer a participant in the rituals pertaining to it.
