Camper has invited IED Barcelona’s Master in Design for Sustainable Fashion Technology students to explore different ways to evolve its classic The Beetle shoe model from an innovative and sustainable perspective. As a starting point, the proposals had to reformulate the modular capacity of this shoe and present a circular, repairable and updatable design, while maintaining function and being aesthetically consistent with the original.
After visiting the brand's headquarters in Inca, Mallorca, where they were able to learn about its philosophy of ethical and aesthetic responsibility, as well as exploring everything from materials to digital manufacturing processes, the students presented two prototypes developed in collaboration with Footwearology at Camper's own production workshops.
Washable and repairable to promote long-lasting use, both designs include knitted fabrics and introduce materials from certified agriculture such as bamboo and sugar cane, in addition to considering the recycling of plastics. They also require less materials and less structure for greater comfort, lightness, practicality and versatility, as well as to achieve an efficient production and recycling process.
