The participants devised desirable future scenarios for Catalonia in 2040 addressing three major challenges: the green transition; advances in life sciences and health; and technologies, information and data at the service of people

IED Barcelona participated as a co-facilitator of the workshop of the foresight day Demà Futur 2024 [Tomorrow Future 2024], held on 27 September at Roca Barcelona Gallery. An initiative that proposes participants to create desirable future scenarios for Catalonia in 2040 addressing three major challenges: the green transition; advances in life sciences and health; and technologies, information and data at the service of people.

Marina Ojan, Head of the Master School; Manuela Procopio, Academic Director; and Susana Zarco, Academic Coordinator of the Master School, acted as guides in the workshop held within the context of the event, with the support of Francesca Fajani and Gabriela Llull, Academic Coordinators of the Communication School.

In the case of the green transition, they analysed possible solutions to achieve climate neutrality. This implies drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting coherent policies to address the climate crisis and environmental degradation.

In order to make technology accessible to people, achieving a digital transformation that guarantees inclusion and social cohesion implies overcoming the gap in access to digital technologies was taken into account. This, in turn, requires developing appropriate digital skills for all citizens and creating a robust and accessible digital infrastructure.

Finally, one of the main challenges for life and health sciences has been ensuring sufficient funding for sustainability in their research and development, thus maintaining the competitiveness of the EU, while addressing the growing health needs of the population and facing demographic changes.

In all three cases, the work process was structured into different phases: the definition of desirable future scenarios, a detailed description of the desired change, the identification of the participants in these scenarios, an analysis of the role of technology in each scenario, and the definition of three specific actions to implement the change.

The main objectives of the day were to encourage prospective thinking and creativity, explore desirable futures in key areas for sustainable development, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and generate concrete ideas to promote positive change.

Demà Futur 2024 was organised by the General Directorate for Analysis and Foresight of the Government of Catalonia in collaboration with Future Days, a festival co-founded by two IED Barcelona alumni, Uri Casademont and Meri Sahade, of which the Istituto Europeo di Design Barcelona is the Main Educational Partner.
