“Ex•Tĕrra”, by the Master in Sustainable Design alumni Carolina Galeazzi, and “Plastilk”, by Ana Sofía Rubio Peschard, Interior Design student, and Bruno Pacini, Fashion Design student, allow us to rethink the future of food waste.
This autumn, the international digital promotion platform INSPIRED IN BARCELONA has highlighted the creativity of two projects with the IED Barcelona hallmark that rethink the future of food waste in its Inspired Picks section. These are “Ex•Tĕrra”, by the Master in Sustainable Design alumni and Co-Founder of Depende Design Studio, Carolina Galeazzi, and “Plastilk”, by Ana Sofía Rubio Peschard, Interior Design student, and Bruno Pacini, Fashion Design student.
“Ex·tĕrra” allows waste from the artichoke native to El Prat, the Carxofa del Prat, to be reused to give it a second life, creating a new bio-based material that does not compete with food production or require any other added components. In this way, it promotes a more conscious and sustainable interaction with reality.
“PLASTILK” is a new mouldable material similar to plastic but generated using natural elements. Formed from the union of casein, a whey residue, with other types of natural or chemical binding agents (flour, artichoke waste, etc.), it is durable as well as sustainable. These characteristics give it multiple possibilities for use in the world of packaging or in the toy industry.
Created by Barcelona Centre de Disseny, with the support of the Barcelona City Council and the collaboration of ACCIÓ, the Government of Catalonia’s agency for business competitiveness, INSPIRED IN BARCELONA seeks to bring creativity closer to the influencers and potential international buyers of design inspired by Barcelona. The initiative works as an amplifier for companies and professionals linked to the creative industries. It also acts as a vehicle for the dissemination of local creativity through thematic projects and exhibitions by sectors (contract, food design, digital creativity, crafts, interior design, the visual arts, etc.), among others.
