“Since April-May, we’ve been working with the team at the IED Barcelona facilities to finish the collection… and it has been spectacular.”

Hitting the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week was always “the goal”, but young Fashion Designer Luis De Javier still can’t believe that he’s achieved it just five years after graduating in Fashion Design from IED Barcelona. “I knew it had to happen one day, because I’ve been working so hard for it, but I imagined it would happen in about five years’ time, if not more,” he admits, surprised. In this short interview, he tells us about the process of achieving that dream and reveals key memories from his years of training at IED Barcelona.

Going to Paris is a dream, but also a great responsibility…

I’ve worked hard to overcome my fear of Paris, to take the bull by the horns and to stand tall in the city knowing that I’m surrounded by the right people to support me. So, I'm not afraid of it anymore, but I do have a lot of respect for it.

To prepare the collection that you’re going to present there, you collaborated with some Fashion Design students from IED Barcelona. How has the experience of working together been?

Indeed, since April-May, we've been working at the IED Barcelona facilities to finish the collection. For me, working with the team here has been spectacular. These guys are incredibly talented and really hard workers. They’ve given it their all every day, even working all summer. I’m very proud of them and I’m looking forward to taking them all to Paris and being able to celebrate with them, and for them to see everything we’ve achieved on the big screen.

You started your journey in the fashion industry here, in these classrooms and these fashion labs. What memories do you have of your time at the School?

That here they teach you that you have to know how to do everything by yourself in case one day you want to start your own project. Although that wasn’t my plan at first — after graduating, I went to London where I was going to do an internship and a Master’s at Saint Martins... the usual stuff. After doing an internship for a year, I began to create my own brand, obviously having to do everything myself at the beginning. So, thanks to knowing how to make patterns, sew, and having learned to work hard on my thesis here at IED, I was already somewhat prepared for this madness of the fashion world that I got into and that no one had warned me would be like this. A madness, however, that I wouldn’t change for anything in the world now.

Luis De Javier will present his collection at the Espace Niemeyer, Paris Fashion Week on 24 September at 5.30 pm
