AI as a Tool for Artistic Expression, Learning, and Experimentation for Digital Natives.
This is the theme of the 17th edition of IED Factory, the annual event organized by the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome, which offers students an interdisciplinary design experience alongside internationally renowned professionals and artists. This year, the event examines the connection between AI and Generation Z, the first generation to grow up in symbiosis with Artificial Intelligence. It is an opportunity to explore the role of technology in the creative process, its ethical implications, and the possibilities it offers young artists and designers.
For one week, nine artists will guide approximately 200 students in an intensive workshop experience aimed at investigating the new frontiers of creativity assisted by artificial intelligence. This exploration will span various disciplines, from music to video art, from performance to multimedia experimentation. Among the themes explored in the workshops are the reinterpretation of sacred rituals, the creation of an AI-driven musical project, the deconstruction of stereotypes about Generation Z, and loneliness in the digital age.
On Friday, February 28, at 6:30 p.m., the results of the workshops will be presented to the public at the IED Rome headquarters, in the presence of artists and students. Leading the creative process this year will be: Benedetto Battipede, visual artist; Federico Coderoni, composer, music producer, and sound artist; Silvia De Gennaro, visual and video artist; Viviana Gravano and Marco Loi, curators and researchers in contemporary art; Benedikt Hartl, architect and multimedia artist; Ginevra Napoleoni, performer and video designer; Canio Salandra, art director and specialist in generative AI; and Valerio Ciminelli, creative director of Field A1. Overseeing the artistic curation is Luca Longobardi, composer, visual artist, and IED Rome professor.
Today, AI is an extension of the creative imagination, but what are its limits and opportunities? How can it enrich art without losing its essence? IED Factory 2025 aims to move beyond the simple opposition between man and technology, positioning itself as a laboratory for collective reflection on the role of AI in society. The goal is to view AI as a catalyst for new forms of learning and interaction, giving Generation Z the opportunity to lead the debate by defining its limits and possibilities.
