How to look at objects nowadays? How many interactions do they suggest? What values do they embody?

We returned to Miami to attend the Alcova Miami event, which took place from December 3 to 8 at the city’s oldest hotel, River Inn. The event gathered a selection of carefully curated international studios, designers, and artists from around the world during Miami Design Week.

Two of our IED alumni showcased their projects at this year’s venue, located in the South River Drive Historic District in East Little Havana, a few steps from the Miami River. Jonathan Bocca (IED Firenze) and Carolina Balcázar (IED Madrid) presented their designs as part of the collective exhibition we entitled: “How to look at objects nowadays?”

Jonathan presented three special objects in River Inn's Room 202: the Giraffa lamp, the Monte Rosa table, and the Movimento stool. His work is known for creating dreamlike creatures by using poor and recycled materials and turning them into objects that transform reality.

On the other hand, Carolina presented her thesis collection: Sólidos Amorphos—a collection of rugs that proposes a dialogue between the physical and digital worlds through Augmented Reality.

Visitors to the River Inn were invited to look at domestic objects differently and think about the interactions they suggest or the values they embody. A space that opened a conversation about the limits of physical objects and the interaction between them and spaces.
