Learn to decode visual and decorative devices, to understand the creative genesis and production processes. All this with the aim of rethinking and applying them in continuity with the past to breathe new life into them and transmit emotions through the Master Course in Brand Heritage Design at IED Milano
Our country is made up of extraordinary environments: archives, libraries, museums, archaeological sites, production systems, sectors and districts generically gathered under the term “Crafts”. The sum of these experiences, skills and traditions is an invaluable asset that helps define both their economic success and cultural identity.
The Master Program in Brand Heritage Design has the educational mission to train a generation of designers equipped with complex and contemporary professionalism, able to work on the relationship between heritage and creativity by looking at the past with an eye to the future.
The Master Program therefore aims to provide the most effective tools for decoding visual and decorative devices, understanding their creative genesis and production processes, with the aim of rethinking them, applying them in continuity with the past and giving them new life. The aim is to provide students with a wealth of technical and formal knowledge capable of offering them coherent and philological preparation, which intersects different domains, encompasses theoretical disciplines and offers practical experience in the field.
The Master Program for a generation of designers who want to build the future without forgetting the past.
A Master Program that thinks of the designer as a figure who can enhance and reinterpret Heritage in a contemporary way to create new stories, with a critical and personal point of view.
The Master Program in Brand Heritage Design at the Milan seat was created with the aim of training students in the construction of narratives based on different design outputs in the field of heritage and decorative arts.
Over the year of the Master Course there will be a combination of lessons, tutorials, case histories, workshops, lectures and projects based on real-life briefs, designed and delivered by industry professionals. The two key projects of the course will give students access to archives and places where design and know-how is produced, so that they can observe the process in detail and develop the skills required to carry out a project.
The Master Program envisages an initial part aimed at aligning basic skills through theoretical/practical teaching such as: design history and design methodology, fundamental courses for investigating the cultural imprint left by Design in Italy, throughout the 20th century, with the aim of identifying experiences and protagonists that have shaped the quality of a design solution. Through an in-depth overview of the strategies and processes behind design, the student will develop his or her own capacity to select and relate concepts to create new stories, from a critical and personal point of view.
The Master Program is structured in such a way that students arrive at the end of the course with a personal portfolio, proof of the individual's ability to be able to rethink the aesthetic and value canons of historical heritage in a contemporary and tangible way.
Great emphasis will be placed on case studies and visits to companies in the fashion and design industry. During the educational programme, the students will concentrate on the development of their Dissertation Project, which envisages collaboration with the Ceramics Museum in Savona and the artisan workshops in the Albisola area. Here they will work in synergy with the archives of the production districts, where important artisan expertise has developed over the years, in order to gain a practical insight into the creative process. This can be done by entering the workshops and talking to the craftsmen in order to establish a link between craftsmanship and design.
The course will eventually culminate in the dissertation project: a paper with a solid research base and substantial project development, tailor-made to the interests and background of each student.
The Master Program in Brand Heritage Design is designed for those who want to play their part in the artistic industries that permeate the culture and economy of our country, for students who wish to acquire the skills to enhance and reinterpret Heritage in a contemporary way to create new stories, from a critical and personal point of view.
The Master Program addresses a topical theme: the use of materials from the past to design the present and is the perfect specialisation for graduates in creative and project disciplines such as graphics, design, fashion, architecture, and interior design. It is also open to professionals who have gained professional experience in the specific areas covered by the course. Knowledge of the Adobe package is essential.
If you are a creative person who likes to combine practical, methodological and theoretical skills, and have the motivation and sensitivity to search archives for iconic elements from the past in order to get them back into the market, this is the course for you.
Bringing Heritage and Design together is not an easy challenge, but the people who are trained will be able to make a difference in this sector.
The Master Program in Brand Heritage Design is highly consistent with the current demands of the labour market, which is looking for figures capable of codifying and updating products related to the cultural, industrial and craft heritage of our country. These professionals will thereby be able to interpret and influence languages with an open and fluid vision, with the possibility of inclusion in the style, product and marketing departments by proposing innovative and strategic solutions.
