‘Por la unidad del archivo’ [‘For the unity of the archive’] is an archaeological project. Archaeology is the science that studies the changes that occur within societies […] through material remains dispersed across geographies and preserved through time. These material remains, present in our society, are located and investigated by experts for further study.
For this project, the material to be studied was not buildings nor items from ancient cultures, but artefacts created by humans that have not found their place in contemporary society. Specifically, the Graphic Design graduate Aida Zabala takes forgotten photographic and typographic material as a starting point to generate a new collection. This material, “dispersed across geographies”, was located in the same place, common to all human beings: the rubbish bins.
The decision to work with this material represents an act of vindication and recognition, giving it back the attention and appreciation it deserves. By working with each archive, its value is restored or, at least, it is provided with a new one, thus postponing their extinction as a token of gratitude.
