Academic year
2023-24
For the second consecutive year, IED Cagliari has partnered with Miradas, a cultural and social regeneration project funded by the Ministry of Culture through the NRP Borghi Linea B grant initiative, in order to elevate the Municipality of Orgosolo by fostering new visions and perspectives.
The project’s objective was to craft a compelling visual identity for Orgosolo, creating a distinctive brand for this tourism destination.
This special extra-curricular project brought together a talented team of Media Design students and alumni, led by Marco Duò, Communication Manager and coordinator of the three-year Communication Design course, and Daniele Conti, graphic designer and lecturer in the same programme.
The project unfolded as a sort of journey, made up of several key milestones:
1. Observation and engagement with the community.
A design project for a municipal administration begins with connecting to its people, listening to the stories of young residents, tour operators, and local officials. Learning more about their visions and expectations was the first step to start the project.
One highlight of this phase were the activities carried out with local schools: 2 days of workshops held with middle and high school students explored the narratives behind the murals that adorn the town’s streets, fostering fresh perspectives.
2. Identifying some of the town’s distinctive elements: its strong sense of identity, elaborate traditions, the surrounding mountains, and the iconic murals adorning the streets, which date back to the 1960s.
Based on the analyses carried out, these elements became the foundation for the concept selected by the municipal administration.
The resulting brand draws aesthetic inspiration from the murals, incorporating their bold strokes and lettering. Each design decision reflects the stories those murals tell, encapsulating the identity of Orgosolo and its community.
The chosen payoff emphasises the unique experience Orgosolo offers to visitors – far removed from the typical imagery of Sardinian tourist destinations. The style echoes the inscriptions accompanying the murals.
The colour palette used for the brand's various aspects and the relative campaign is linked to the town's traditional attire: the ochre of the headdress and the green of the skirts.
The project was unveiled to the press and the Orgosolo community on Saturday, 30 November 2024.
The event was attended by Pasquale Mereu, Mayor of Orgosolo; Paola Locci, project manager of the Miradas project; Vincenzo Cascone, narrative director for the Miradas project; Marco Duò and Daniele Conti and the IED students and alumni who brought the vision to life: Gabriele Idili, Giada Martis, Lorenzo Zoccheddu, Cristiano Pittalis, Giorgia Mura, and Matteo Montisci.
