This Interior Design Final Degree Project from IED Kunsthal Bilbao emerges from a paradox: student Macarena Solla’s irrational passion for roadside stores. Those places that are neither restaurants, nor cafés, nor shops but, sometimes, all of these things at the same time.
Despite their aesthetics — which are far removed from any canonical concept of good design — the stores revive the memory of an unexposed, untaught popular culture that could be perceived as vulgar, tacky or ugly, but which can also be understood as unique and authentic.
They are peculiar places, where special events take place: life has given them that form and function. ‘Livin’ Las Ventas’ [literally ‘Livin’ The Sales’ or ‘Livin’ The Stores’ with a play on Las Vegas] aims to immerse itself in an analysis of roadside stores from a different and experiential design perspective that unravels and contains the essence of these places, creating a direct relationship between the space and the event.
