Two sustainable design projects to improve the lives of shipwrecked people and crew on board the Ocean Viking, the ship used by the NGO SOS Mediterranee for the rescue and first aid of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.

The project is carried out for the NGO by IED together with Ferrarelle Società Benefit.

VALVE BAG, the first solution proposed by the students, addresses the need for a new design for the rescue kit, along with the requirement for a functional and waterproof backpack to hold documents and personal items that must not get damaged or wet. In fact, in order not to lose them on the crossing, shipwrecked people usually store their documents taped up inside plastic bags. VALVE BAG is a waterproof backpack designed with recycled fabric and tarpaulin scraps, which features a hermetically sealed rescue kit, a removable shoulder strap document holder, and an external valve that allows it to be inflated and used as a pillow.

The PHONE BOOTH project, on the other hand, answers the need for a space that can be dismantled and which provides privacy when people on board are communicating with their families. SOS Mediterranee provides an anonymous telephone, so that you can only use it to make calls and send text messages but not to receive them. The space created by the designers is a folding telephone booth created with sound-absorbing materials that reduce noise on the boat. It folds up, can be carried by one person, and has a magnetic back that allows it to be attached both inside and outside the shelters.
