An innovative maternal healthcare initiative designed to address critical challenges facing indigenous communities, starting with the Wayuu tribe in Colombia. By combining advanced healthcare technology with cultural sensitivity, ‘Almaterna’ aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality in underserved regions, where access to quality care is limited and traditional practices play a critical role.
‘Almaterna’ offers a hybrid solution. On the one hand, an easy-to-use mobile application that provides healthcare workers with tools such as telemedicine support, AI-powered diagnostics, and culturally-adapted training. This digital approach is combined with a physical visit kit, which includes essential tools such as portable ultrasounds and vital sign monitors to perform on-site diagnostics. Both elements empower healthcare workers, who can offer quality maternal care, while respecting the traditions of local communities.
‘Almaterna’ stands out for its commitment to collaboration. By working closely with traditional midwifes, local leaders and global healthcare experts, the initiative bridges the gap between modern medicine and ancestral knowledge. This holistic approach not only improves health outcomes, but also builds trust and fosters long-term relationships.
