From 13 to 15 October, three Transportation Design students from IED Barcelona (Mateo Daniel Bigalli Melaragno, Gianfranco Piero Alvigni and Patricio Alejandro Montoya Angulo) travelled to Turin, Italy, to compete alongside their classmates from IED Turin (including Erasmus student Queralt Santacreu) in a Design Sketch Battle for Ferrari.
In a new example of mobility between campuses, the students, organised into six groups of 15 participants — in which both undergraduate and master’s students were mixed — were able to put their sketching techniques into practice in teams during the 10-hour challenge on 14 October.
Based on a brief provided by the car brand around the word “seduta” (the act of sitting), the future designers explored in depth how to approach the aforementioned concept and then capture it on an aesthetic level on paper in the form of various sketches.
Jesus Iglesias, Programme Leader of Transportation Design at IED Barcelona, accompanied the students to the Design Sketch Battle, where his task was to “guide them so that they could go as far as possible in their performance”.
The jury, made up of three members of Ferrari (Andrea Loi, Exterior Lead Designer; Damiano Scanu and Wey-en Luo, Interior Designers) evaluated both the originality of the idea and the subsequent development of the students’ proposals. It also took into account formal creativity, teamwork, and their joint strategy when choosing the winning group.
The winner of the challenge was “Team Rosso Corsa”, led by Gianfranco Piero Alvigni. The prize: a visit to the Ferrari Museum and the factory in Bologna.
The IED Barcelona students also took advantage of their stay in Turin to visit the Museo dell’Auto (National Automobile Museum).
