Marcello Pipitone and Lorenzo Attanasio, IED alumni, participated in the talks curated by two students from the Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Stylist

On January 16th, an exclusive event organized by the magazine Outside Culture took place at the vibrant Arca, a venue that serves as a cultural hub for young people in Milan.

Outside Culture was founded in 2023 with the aim of showcasing emerging brands and talents in the streetwear world.

The event's goal, (organized by Marco Bonometto, a second-year student in the Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Stylist) was to create a community of young creatives and designers, blending music and culture. Fashion, art, and trends became the epicenter, around which eclectic personalities gravitated.

The Outside Culture team selected several designers to participate in the Talks and share their experiences. Among them, two personalities with IED backgrounds were interviewed: Marcello Pipitone and Lorenzo Attanasio. The two young designers were interviewed by Marco Bonometto, and Sabrina Salem, a third-year student in Fashion Stylist.

Marcello Pipitone, originally from Milan, grew up in the Bonola neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, drawing many influences from this area, especially the urban landscape and public transport. Marcello graduated from a graphic design high school and later enrolled in the Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design at IED Milan. His path was straightforward, as the idea for a streetwear brand with a clear masculine orientation came to him from day one, culminating in the final collection he presented for his thesis. During his years at university, Marcello realized the importance of originality. For him, Pinterest was not enough for inspiration, so he began photographing cityscapes that he later compiled into an artbook, which he still uses today. A critical essence and the instinct to create something new emerged for Marcello from the lack of originality he found in stores.

For his first collection, which he created at IED, he used unused fabrics from various brands, clothes from family and friends, and items from Humana sales. This mix of materials led to colorful pieces that allowed him to focus on the importance of upcycling, a concept that remains central to his fashion philosophy.

Lorenzo Attanasio, born in 2000 in Rome, moved to Milan to study Fashion Design. His creative instinct developed early, but it was his father who encouraged him to attend IED, hoping he would acquire concrete technical and practical skills. Lorenzo had something to say to the world, and he did so by using fashion as an emotional and street-driven medium. IED taught him the power of developing a product from scratch, creating something unique and personal, and experimenting with different forms of art. His thesis project was the first step that led him to create his brand, Vertiigine.

For Lorenzo, fashion must be able to transcend space and time while expressing the universal concept of love.

Living in Milan’s Chinatown was a major source of inspiration for him. Starting from this environment, he focused his work on experimenting with textures and layering, following a strongly futuristic vision.

During his interview, Lorenzo emphasized the importance of networking. In fact, the suppliers he relied on for his thesis collection are the same ones he continues to work with today.

His final piece of advice was to experiment without limiting oneself to a single genre, especially when dressing musical artists. Opportunities are always around the corner for those who know how to seize them.
