The EXTRA SOUND series of talks on Sound Design continues with Sergio Maggioni (Neunau): can the analysis of natural sounds help explain the implications of climate change on Alpine glaciers?
Can sound connect art, science, and education? This question is at the core of the talk that Sergio Maggioni will present at IED Milano on November 20 (6:30 p.m., Via Sciesa 4, Room S10) as part of the EXTRA SOUND series promoted by the Bachelor's Degree in Sound Design.
For the past five years, Sergio Maggioni, also known as Neunau, has been exploring the impact of climate change on glaciers through his artistic and scientific project, A Sound in Extinction. In collaboration with universities and renowned national and international glaciologists, he has conducted numerous expeditions to the Adamello glacier, where he has collected 15,000 hours of sound recordings and temperature data.
This data, aside from its scientific purpose, is also used for educational outreach on the impact of climate change. Through artistic works, where sound acts as a tool for awareness and understanding, Maggioni conveys the urgency of climate issues.
EXTRA SOUND: WHO IS SERGIO MAGGIONI?
Originally from Valcamonica, Sergio has lived in Milan since 1999, where he graduated in 2002 in Exhibit Design. Between 2002 and 2009, he worked with prominent design studios in the field of art, supporting international museums and artists. At the same time, he pursued his musical interests, collaborating on various projects and performing at major national and international festivals across Europe.
In 2009, he signed a publishing contract with Sony Music Publishing, working as a songwriter and producer for prominent Italian pop artists, and producing music for records, cinema, radio, and TV, with labels and networks including Universal, Warner, RAI, and Sky.
In 2015, he returned to Valcamonica, where he founded the research-based artistic project Neunau. His work investigates the relationship between humans and nature, exploring places where this interaction is evident and capturing sounds and experiences to translate into artistic works, including sound installations, experimental music, performances, and documentaries.
In 2020, he launched the research and outreach project A Sound in Extinction with the support of various universities, organizations, and partners.
The second appointment with EXTRA SOUND and Sergio Maggioni is set for November 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Via Sciesa 4, Room S10. Admission is free.
