DesignXCommons is an itinerant podcast on design, sponsored by IED, that talks about intuition and virtuous ideas that can make things better. Matilde Losi hosts designers and extraordinary minds in a camper van to talk about fairer ways and worlds, to learn to navigate the complexity of our time in simple terms.

DesignXCommons sees design as a transformative platform capable of driving regenerative change for the betterment of society and the environment. It starts with something that belongs to all of us: education and shared assets.

DesignXCommons is an extension of the design thinking at the heart of the new Master of Arts courses.

How do you turn intuition into a project that captures desires and enriches the quality of your community’s interaction, be it outdoor or foodies? Designers and entrepreneurs Simon Beckerman and Yuri Kaban start with common sense, that instinctive perception that comes from carefully reading reality and suggesting alternative directions and design methods.

Is it possible to see the world in a different way? According to Sister Giuliana Galli and sociologist Michael Kaethler, it is possible to experiment with methods to test the thresholds of what we consider normal. In all of this, care is a fundamental tool that we need to acquire in order to help us deal with extremely awkward situations. Like love: we are obsessed with it, we consume it, and yet no one has ever studied it at school.

What is meant by Commons and Commoning? Massimo De Angelis, Professor Emeritus of Political Economy and Social Change, and Angela Rui, Head of MA Programs for IED Milano, reflect on the possibility of identifying new design methods that start from a few fundamental questions: why, for whom, what, when and how much do we produce, if we start from the assumption that we want to improve the quality of social and environmental relations?

What new experiences can be designed through technology and new media? Sociologist Derrick de Kerckhove and transmedia artist Gregorio Comandini regard these tools as an interface between bodies and the world, reminding us of the importance of understanding how they work so that we can hack their operating models and avoid being designed by technology and its forms.
